100,000-watt Transmitter Arrives in Swaziland
On September 18th, the ninth 100,000-watt shortwave transmitter
built at the HCJB Global Technology Center in Elkhart arrived at the
TWR (Trans World Radio) site in Swaziland. Dan helped design and
program the computer control system for this series of equipment now in
use in Ecuador, Guam, Australia, and Swaziland.
In Africa, TWR will use this transmitter to send
the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ in 30 languages to the
vast regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. We praise God for the privilege of
being involved in the production of technology that spreads Good News
across the world. You can read more about how this transmitter will be
used at:

Partnership Brings Christian Radio to Azande Tribe
The Azande tribe, more than 2 million strong, resides in a remote
corner of Africa where the Sudan, Central African Republic, and the
Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) meet. Mboligihe Ndalu, a member
of the tribe, came to the U.S. to study at Wheaton College. He had a
vision for bringing Christian radio to his tribe and contacted the HCJB
Global Technology Center for help. We provided the transmitter and
antenna for the project and technical support during the
installation.
On April 20, 2008, in the village of Dungu in the DRC, Radio RTK
became the first Christian radio station to broadcast the gospel in the
Azande language. A report from the field states, "It was Mboligihe's
vision and HCJB Global's partnership that made it possible. To see the
look on the people's faces when they hear the radio speaking their
language for the very first time ever…I don't know how you top
that!"
Celebrating 25 Years
We, along with two other couples from the Technology Center,
celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in July. We count it a
privilege to have been able to serve the Lord together at HCJB Global
since we were married in Ecuador in 1983. Lord willing, we will
continue our service for him in the years to come.
Barb Honored for Service
On September 17th, the secretary of the Board of Trustees of HCJB
Global presented Barb with an illuminated parchment honoring her for 25
years of service with the mission. Although both of us have been
serving in missions for over 30 years, Barb worked at missionary
schools in Brazil and Ecuador before joining HCJB Global in 1983.
In Barb's own words:
You might say I "married into" HCJB Global. This past July, I
celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary as well as my 25th years as a
member of HCJB. The missionary personnel director and I arbitrarily
chose July 1, 1983, as my date of entry into the mission, and I married
a wonderful engineer on July 16. Having spent three years in Quito with
the Christian and Missionary Alliance teaching at the Alliance Academy,
and being involved with the HCJB music department, I was already known
in the community and passed the personnel director's scrutiny without
the customary week at candidate orientation.
Teaching MK's (missionary kids) on the field, thus
allowing families to stay together, was a passion for me. I taught for
two years in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at the Pan American Christian Academy
before coming to Quito. I finished four years in Quito at the Alliance
Academy before motherhood changed my focus.
We moved to Miami to work at the mission headquarters for 18 months
before coming to Elkhart in late 1986. Involvement with our local
church in youth work and music, raising and "launching" three children,
and supporting my husband in his endeavors has filled my years. I
returned to teaching part-time at the local Christian school to cover
our children's tuition bill in 1997 and remain there today.
I thank the Lord for the privilege of serving these 25 years with
HCJB Global. Though the mission has a new logo, a new name (formerly
HCJB World Radio), new leadership, and new goals, the heartbeat remains
the same - the desire to present Christ to the lost, making believers
of all nations. The Lord is always faithful. He gives us strength for
the journey, and we give him the glory.
Family News
Jenny (TESOL at Moody Bible Institute), Emily (Office Administration
at Ivy Tech Community College), and John (Fisheries and Aquatic
Sciences at Purdue University) returned to their college classes in
August. If all goes according to plan, Jenny will graduate in December.
Pray that our children will be sensitive to God's leading as they study
and mature. While we are proud of their educational accomplishments,
our greatest desire is that they serve the Lord wherever they are.
Thank You!
The national financial news sounds grim as we write this letter
which makes us all the more thankful for the financial and prayer
support that comes from you, our partners. We are all dependent on the
Lord, not just the missionaries, and we thank those who share what God
has given them to further the spread of his kingdom on earth. May God
help us all to use his provision wisely.
