New Transmitter Doubles Potential Audience

Map of Europe - Poland

Radio CCM, a Christian Polish radio network founded by a former underground ministry during the Cold War, has added a new, more powerful transmitter from the HCJB Global Technology Center in Elkhart, Indiana, more than doubling the coverage area of its Chorzów outlet.

More than 4 million people in the area now have access to local Christian broadcasts, and the six-station network can potentially reach the entire Silesia region of southern Poland.

"This is huge," said Mike Dworak, sub-regional director for Central Europe. "It takes a lot of work, a lot of people and a lot of prayer to accomplish something of this magnitude." It is estimated that less than 2 percent of the population in Poland are believers.

Thousands of listeners have responded to the programming since the network began with a single transmitter in Oswiecim (Auschwitz) in 1998. "Your evening programs are deeply moving," wrote one listener recently. "The testimonies of changed lives remind me that God is in control. May Radio CCM lead many more people to an encounter with Jesus!"

When asked about specific needs for the ministry, Dworak replied, "Please pray for the continued health of the Radio CCM staff as they strive to help the network become self-supporting and for the ability to better publicize the stations and spread God's Word."

Radio Station Starts Pygmy Programming

Announcers at Radio Boali

In August, the ICDI (Integrated Community Development International) radio station that Dan helped install during February in the Central African Republic, began Pygmy language programming. Already broadcasts were being done in French, Sango and Fulfulde. Thanks to Paul Ohlin, former missionary to Congo (Brazzaville), currently working with the Grace Brethren Mission, the station had programming for one month already in hand to put on the radio!

Micropower Water Project

Working with model water wheel

Getting electrical power to operate a radio station in remote areas can be a challenge. The HCJB Global Technology Center has teamed up with LeTourneau University (Dan's alma mater) to develop a water wheel that can be anchored in a river or large stream to generate a few hundred watts of power. Our goal is to develop a wheel that can be positioned in a flowing stream, eliminating the need for constructing a dam.

This past summer, one of our Elkhart engineers worked with an intern from LeTourneau to construct a model, pictured above. More students are getting involved during this school year, and it is our desire that some of them use their talents for the Lord's work when they graduate.

30 Years with HCJB

On September 12, 2007, at the HCJB Global Annual Members Meeting, Dan was recognized for 30 years of service with the mission. The following photos are reminders of some of the milestones of ministry since 1977.

Dan with shortwave automation system

During his first term of service, Dan lived in Quito, Ecuador, and helped design and build the first computer-controlled automation system for HCJB. He and other engineers built their own computers which directed up to six different radio programs to ten shortwave radio transmitters. This system helped insure that the right language was sent to the right destination at the right time, so that people could hear the message.

Dan and Barb at engagement party

The highlight of Dan's second term in Ecuador was his engagement and marriage to Barbara Gordon, a teacher at the Alliance Academy missionary school in Quito. She complements Dan's ministry and has been a great encouragement through the years. One year later, their first child, Jenny, was born in Ecuador before they returned to the U.S. in the fall of 1984.

Dan with 100,000 watt shortwave transmitter

In November of 1986 after serving for a time at HCJB Global headquarters in Miami, Florida, Dan and Barb moved to Elkhart, Indiana, to help design and build high-power shortwave radio transmitters for Christian broadcasting.

Dan with children in jungle 1993

The summer of 1993, Dan took the family to Ecuador where he helped outfit HCJB's super-power 500,000-watt radio transmitter with a computer control system. What a privilege it was to involve the whole family in an overseas mission experience.

Dan working on satellite system in Central Africa

Dan's trip to the Central African Republic this past February was the most recent highlight of the past 30 years. He was able to use his expertise in radio, computer networking, and satellite technology to help establish a new Christian radio station that reaches an entire country. What a privilege!

Thank you, Partners

We want to thank and praise God for everyone who has partnered with us to bring the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ to others. When you pray and give to the ministry of HCJB Global, we are able to assist other believers, who then are enabled to better reach their nations and communities. None of us is more important than the other; everyone has a part including the senders (our supporters), the equippers (HCJB Global), and partner ministries. Without each of us, the ministry would be diminished.

As the Apostle Paul wrote, "I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now..." Philippians 1:3-5 (NIV)
