HCJB World Radio 2005 in Review

As we look back on the past year, God has enabled HCJB World Radio to continue to present the gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. The Engineering Center here in Elkhart is involved in many of these efforts listed below. We count it a privilege to partner together with you and other Christian ministries as we seek to minister to a needy world.

Worldwide

HCJB World Radio assisted in radio planting and development efforts in 38 countries with help from staff members at the HCJB World Radio Engineering Center in Elkhart, Indiana.

We developed fixed-tuned, solar-powered radios to be distributed to radio partners in third-world countries. You can read all about it at www.radioplanting.com.

Latin America

HCJB in Ecuador held radio training conferences in Paraguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala and Dominican Republic to teach national believers how to broadcast the gospel to their communities.

Hospital Vozandes-Quito celebrated its 50th anniversary reaching more than 10,000 outpatients and 4,000 emergency patients per month. Patients receive medical treatment and spiritual counseling.

HCJB World Radio’s Ecuador hospitals used charity funds to help patients with more than $250,000 worth of care, so even the poorest people could receive medical help.

Asia/Pacific

HCJB World Radio-Australia expanded its outreach with programs going out in 12 languages (English, Urdu, Hindi, Nepali, Chattisgarhi, Bangla, Bhojpuri, Tamil, Telgu, Marwari, Marathi and Santhali

PNG Listeners

Wantok Radio Light installed a shortwave station in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, and worked to expand an FM network for the country with assistance from the Engineering Center.

Euro-Asia

HCJB World Radio helped put partner station “Radio Emmanuel” on the air in Kiev, Ukraine — the city’s first 24-hour-a-day Christian radio station.

The number of affiliates with the New Life Radio Russian satellite radio network increased to 63 in 2005.

Yes, They are Listening!

Sometimes it is difficult to know whether our efforts are in vain since we have so little feedback from closed countries to which we minister. But this year we were greatly encouraged to learn that many are listening in the North Africa/Middle East region to satellite broadcasts as was reported by our staff for that region:

Satellite dishes in North Africa

For a long time we didn't know if we had any listeners because we didn't get responses from them. This year we were ready to terminate the project unless we received special confirmation from God. We trusted God, and He showed us the harvest He had prepared.

We received results of a secular broadcast study of listenership in homes across the North Africa/Middle East region. In Jordan 10,000 households were listening, in Morocco 59,000 households, and in Saudi Arabia 72,000 households. These numbers represent entire families who are hearing the message of God's love.

God is faithful beyond our imagination!

Family News

Dan has had more than enough to do this past spring and summer, and some projects had to be put on hold until this fall. The Engineering Center is growing and changing, bringing new demands for support of computing equipment which is used in ministry. This spring, Dan’s coworker in computer support at the center began his transition to Papua New Guinea to assist a partner installing a Christian FM network across that nation. A high school student helped for the summer, but now Dan has to shoulder most of the computer support responsibilities.

The world of broadcasting is changing, and Dan is researching how we can help our partners with Internet webcasting and podcasting, a new technology for distributing radio programs to Apple iPod and similar MP3 players. (Note: if you want to find out more about this technology, ask a teenager.) Computers are becoming as important as radio in communicating the gospel.

Barb began her ninth year as librarian at the local Christian school John attends. She is also our church’s librarian and Sunday school superintendent, and has begun her ninth year on the Elkhart Public Library Board of Trustees.

Jenny(21) came home to Elkhart in July for a two-week “winter” vacation from Word of Life Bible Institute in Argentina. She has begun her third year of studies in theology and Christian work and plans to complete her time there in 2006. She is receiving good Bible teaching and seeks to follow the Lord in her life. She plans to be home for several weeks in December before returning to South America for “summer” camp in January.

Emily(18) graduated from high school in June and began attending a local community college in August.

Emily completed her last year in 4-H Rabbit Club and went out with flare. She won the showmanship award for the Elkhart County 4-H Rabbit Club and was the overall Grand Champion in the small animal round robin showmanship for the Elkhart County Fair. She represented the county at the Indiana State Fair placing with honors there.

John with guitar

John(16) has begun his junior year in high school and has grown bigger than his dad. His musical interests these days include guitars and singing in the school chamber choir. His part-time job at a local pet and garden shop gives him spending money and helps him learn more about exotic animals which he finds fascinating.

Financial Update

We praise and thank the Lord for several new financial supporters who have joined our team this year and for a major anonymous donation. Our ministry fund is still in negative territory, and we are praying for more new partners in our ministry. Increased costs and the loss of several supporters have made our finances tight, but we will continue to serve as the Lord enables and will trust him and his people for provision.

If you have friends, relatives or a church group that might become part of our ministry, let us know, and we will send you a video on DVD describing our ministry.

Thank you!

We want to express our sincere thanks to everyone who prays for our ministry and supports us financially. You are true partners in the Lord’s work with us and are a vital link in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world. Thank you.
